Cambo extension - Greenpeace response

In response to the North Sea Transition Authority (previously known as the Oil and Gas Authority) granting Siccar Point Energy and Shell a two year extension on the Cambo oilfield's licence[1], Philip Evans, Climate Campaigner for Greenpeace UK, said -

“In granting this licence extension, the Government have highlighted yet another weakness in their supposed ‘climate checkpoint’ regime for new oil and gas – they will just sidestep it entirely when it’s inconvenient. They should not be doing it, although no doubt we will now hear about how plans to drill for a high-sulphur crude oil, which we cannot refine in the UK and will not be produced for years, are vital to the UK’s energy security. Cambo will do nothing to ease the current gas price crisis, and the fossil fuel lobby’s soundbite arguments fall apart under the slightest scrutiny. For decarbonisation to work, we need effective rules that are actually applied to major polluters, regardless of how much money they have and who they’re friends with.”
