Prime Minister will host today (Monday 21
March) a roundtable of leaders in the nuclear industry to discuss
domestic energy security and nuclear projects in the UK.
Taking place at Downing Street, the roundtable is the latest step
in the Government’s engagement with industry ahead of the
publication of the British Energy Security Strategy this
month.
The PM has been clear that nuclear – from small modular reactors
to larger power plants – is absolutely crucial to boosting UK
energy security and independence as we move away from Russian
hydrocarbons and foreign fossil fuels.
Currently accounting for around 15% of our electricity
generation, it provides a safe, clean and reliable energy source
as part of our energy mix.
Attendees are expected to discuss how government and industry can
work together to remove barriers and progress future nuclear
projects in the UK more quickly and cheaply.
The PM will also meet with apprentices in the nuclear industry to
hear about how they’re developing the skills and expertise needed
as part of our energy transition.
This week also marks one year since the UK government and the oil
and gas industry agreed the landmark North Sea Transition Deal to
support the sector’s transition to cleaner energy.
Following the Prime Minister’s renewed commitment to the industry
at a roundtable of industry leaders, the Exchequer Secretary
will chair a forum with oil
and gas lenders to discuss North Sea oil and gas investment
conditions
She will meet with technical banks that lend to oil and gas
companies operating in the UK and will emphasise the Government’s
commitment to domestic offshore oil and gas production.
In the coming days, the PM is also expected to speak to CEOs from
the wind sector, another UK success story in boosting renewable,
home-grown energy.
