Prospect comment on asbestos in Parliament

Prospect Deputy General Secretary Garry Graham, commenting on reports of workers in Parliament potentially having been exposed to asbestos, said:

“This incredibly concerning incident lays bare the risk of remaining in the Palace of Westminster while complex asbestos removal, fire prevention work and masonry repairs are carried out. We have repeatedly warned of the danger the crumbling estate poses to the safety of the people working in and visiting Parliament.

"Only a full decant – as repeatedly recommended by experts – will allow us to safeguard the heart of our democracy for future generations.

"Those politicians who continue to oppose restoring and renewing the Palace in the safest and most cost-effective manner must reflect on this as we await the findings of the Health and Safety Executive.”
