NEU reacts to CST Report on Antisemitism 

Responding to today’s report from the Community Security Trust (CST) which recorded 2,255 antisemitic incidents in the UK in 2021, an increase of 34% on the incidents recorded by CST in 2020 and the highest total ever reported to CST in a single calendar year, NEU Joint General Secretaries Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, said: 

“There can never be an excuse for antisemitism, whether in the form of direct attacks, harassment, abuse or antisemitic tropes. Coming shortly after Holocaust Memorial Day, this disturbing report is a timely reminder that we must all remain vigilant and each of us bears responsibility for challenging antisemitism in all its ugly forms. 

“That there were 182 anti-Jewish hate incidents involving schools, school students and teachers in 2021, the most reported in any year and more than triple the 54 incidents in the education sector in 2020, is particularly disturbing. The NEU commits to playing its part in ensuring that schools are safe spaces for all pupils and staff, whatever their faith or beliefs, and will work with our members to educate and support them to challenge antisemitism whenever and wherever it arises.”
