LGA responds to new RAC statistics

Responding to new RAC figures that reveal pothole-related breakdowns have reached a three-year high, Cllr David Renard, Transport spokesperson for the Local Government Association, said:

“Councils are on the side of road users, and are working hard to keep our roads safe and resilient, repairing potholes as quickly as they can. However, it would take £10 billion and more than a decade for councils to clear the current local roads repair backlog.

“Greater and consistent long-term investment in local road maintenance is needed so councils can embark on the widespread improvement of our roads that is desperately needed.

“The ability of councils to improve local transport connectivity and infrastructure, including upgrades to local bus, road and cycle infrastructure, is critical to government ambitions to level up the country, support our long-term economic recovery from the pandemic and reduce transport related carbon emissions to meet the country’s net-zero targets.”
