A new vaccine for infants, against the most common strains of
rotavirus, was introduced into the childhood immunisation
schedule in July 2013.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis among
children and results in a significant number of young children
being admitted to hospital each year. The vaccine which will be
used for this programme is called Rotarix®.
Please refer to the Green Book chapter on
rotavirus and A guide to immunisations
for babies up to 13 months of age.
More information on Rotavirus disease is available on NHS.UK and on GOV.UK.
Immunisation patient group
direction (PGD) templates are available for authorisation and
adoption to provide NHS routine immunisation services.
‘Immunisation against infectious disease’, also known as the
Green Book, has the
latest information on vaccines and vaccination procedures in the
UK.
Any adverse events should be documented in the patient notes and
reported to the MHRA through the Yellow Card reporting
system.
Healthcare professionals should contact their local health protection team with
any queries.
