response is in plain type.]
Commenting on the Government’s response published today,
, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Committee, said: “To help deliver clean growth and
high-quality jobs, the Government needs to do more to demonstrate
long-term clear leadership on industrial policy. Ministers are
too often guilty of approaching industrial policy without any
clarity or consistency.
“It’s also important that Ministers in Westminster work with
devolved governments and regional leaders to come forward with
meaningful metrics and regular, annual reporting on progress
towards shared industrial goals across the union”.
Background – BEIS Committee report, Industrial Policy,
28th June 2021
The BEIS Committee report
(also see news
item) said that the Government had failed to set out its
approach to industrial policy following the scrapping of the
Industrial Strategy, leaving many businesses unclear about the
future of the UK economy
The report made a series of recommendations to help ensure the
Government sets out a strategic industrial policy, including a
call for clarity on who is leading industrial policy in the UK.
