NHS Providers responds to the General Medical Council's 2021 national training survey report

Responding to the publication of the GMC’s national training survey report, the deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery said:

“Trust leaders will broadly welcome the findings of the GMC’s national training survey report.

“It is positive that despite the enormous challenges currently facing the NHS, 88% of trainees report their clinical supervision to be good or very good in the past year, with 91% of trainers enjoying their role. This is testament to the incredible teamwork we see across the health service.

“But we should not underestimate the very real risk to NHS staff wellbeing and the impact that workforce gaps across the service continue to have on the frontline. It is concerning that 33% of trainees and 25% of trainers reported high levels of burnout.

“This reflects huge pressures across the system. It is clear we need a fully costed and funded workforce plan to ensure the NHS has enough staff not only to cover existing workforce gaps, but to safeguard staff wellbeing as well”.
