Commenting on Thank a Teacher Day,
Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School and
College Leaders, said:
“There have been many unsung heroes during the course of the
pandemic, and among them are the staff working in our schools and
colleges who have exemplified the spirit which has helped to keep
the country running during the most trying times in living
memory.
“Our teachers have had to rapidly adapt to changing circumstances
on many occasions. They have rapidly become experts in delivering
remote learning; run on-site provision for the children of key
workers and vulnerable children during lockdowns; managed complex
Covid safety measures; set up testing stations to enable pupils
to return to classrooms; and, most recently, taken responsibility
for assessing students following the cancellation of public
exams.
“They have done this in a calm, professional and unflappable
manner, providing children and young people with a sense of
continuity amidst the turbulence caused by the pandemic, and
against a backdrop of constantly shifting guidance from the
government.
“Thank a Teacher Day is the perfect opportunity for us to all
place on record our gratitude for a job well done, and a job
which continues to be extremely challenging with spiralling rates
of coronavirus infection and growing numbers of young people
having to self-isolate.”
