Labour will today pledge to bring the country together to take on
the challenges exposed by the pandemic and seize the
opportunities of the future.
Ahead of a visit to Airbus in Bristol today, Labour leader
will say that the country was too divided going into
the Covid crisis after a decade under the Conservatives, but that
the way the British people responded showed “we can achieve
incredible things when we come together”.
Starmer will be joined by Party Chair to hear from
workers about how they rose to the Covid challenge by using test
aircraft to fly in millions of masks and PPE for front-line
staff.
Taking inspiration from that story and the countless examples of
how the country came together during the pandemic, they will
pledge to use that spirit of togetherness to take Britain to new
heights as we face the future.
Acknowledging the need for ambitious, transformative policies to
meet the new reality and repair the damage done by the
Conservatives, the pair will launch ‘Stronger Together: A Better
Future for Britain’ – a major new policy-building project to
bring Britain together, recognising the way Covid has changed
people’s daily lives, and to deliver a fairer, more secure
future.
The project will set out a roadmap for how Labour in government
can deliver its mission to make Britain the best place to grow up
and grow old in. It will champion new technologies, show how
world-class public services can create new opportunities across
the country, and take on the battle of the climate crisis.
Covering six main themes, the roadmap will call on the country to
work together for:
- Better jobs and better work
- A green and digital future
- Safe and secure communities
- Public services that work from the start
- A future where families come first
- Britain in the world
Dodds has hailed the project as a chance to set out “an exciting,
hopeful vision for Britain under a Labour government”, warning
that the country “cannot afford yet more division under the
Conservatives”.
Speaking before the launch, Labour leader , said:
“When the pandemic hit Britain was too divided. We were too
fractured as a country after a decade of the Conservatives. That
meant we weren’t as well prepared as we could have been, so the
pandemic hit us harder.
“But the way the British people responded showed we can achieve
incredible things when we come together: looking after our
neighbours and communities, getting behind key workers,
supporting local businesses, volunteering to help our NHS and
supporting the vaccine effort.
“Labour wants to harness that spirit to start building a better
future for everyone in Britain. A future where the Government
helps communities to thrive, no matter where they are on the map.
A future with world class public services that work for everyone.
A future where Britain leads the way on tech and green
innovation, creating stable and secure jobs for all.
“We need to build a future that everyone in Britain can be proud
of. Labour did it before: creating the NHS, introducing a
national minimum wage, slashing child poverty and bringing peace
to Northern Ireland.
