The Government must stop dithering on Sizewell C and
use Hinkley Point as an example, says GMB Union
GMB, the union for energy workers, has praised Hinkley point C
after 1,700 new jobs were announced.
The union called on the Government to ‘use its example power the
country towards a Net Zero future’ as the company released its
2021 report. [1]
This morning [May 25] the company behind the construction of
Britain’s first new nuclear power station in a generation
released figures showing the 1,700 new jobs were on top of more
than 10,000 job opportunities created since 2016.
The company also claims a further 71,000 jobs will be supported
across Britian by the project, which is now projected to deliver
£18 billion into the wider UK supply chain.
GMB, a recognised union at the site, praised the company for
‘showing what employers can do by working in partnership with
trade unions’, which has seen 14,000 people and 750 apprentices
trained and assessed in facilities funded by Hinkley Point C
since 2016.
The union has also urged the government to stop dithering on
Sizewell C, and use Hinkley’s success story as an example to move
the country towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Charlotte Childs, GMB national officer said:
“Today’s report really shows what unions and forward-looking
employers can do by working with Trade Unions, creating highly
skilled jobs for the future.
“These new jobs are not only a huge boost to the UK economy, but
the local economy of Bridgewater – providing thousands of
high-quality jobs and apprenticeships for people who would
otherwise have to move away from the town.
“Today is yet more evidence Hinkley Point C is a project the UK
can be proud of. It’s now time for the Government to stop
dithering on Sizewell C, look at the example that Hinkley point
is setting and power us up towards the UKs net zero target.”
