- Stockport has 2,257 licensed Teslas, according to DVLA data
- Seven other local authorities, including Leeds, Milton Keynes
and Watford, have more than 1,000 licensed Teslas
- A quarter of licensed Teslas (10,207) are in the South East,
while there are only 487 in the North East
- There are more than 40,000 Teslas licensed with the DVLA
across England, Scotland and Wales
Stockport has more licensed Teslas than any other local authority
in Britain, according to research by the UK’s largest car leasing
comparison website LeaseLoco.
LeaseLoco submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the
Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), asking for data on
the number of licensed Teslas, and where they were licensed.
DVLA figures revealed that of the 41,314
licensed Teslas across England, Scotland and Wales, Stockport has
2,257, more than any other local authority.
That’s over three times as many Elon Musk’s battery-powered
Teslas in the Greater Manchester town, than in Wales
(690) and almost as many as Scotland
(2,367).
Six other local authorities have more than 1,000 registered
Teslas; they include Leeds (1,833) and Swindon (1,397). West
Somerset has the fewest number of Teslas, with just five.
Broken down by region, the South East has the most licensed
Teslas with 10,207, followed by London (6,810), while the North
East (487) has the fewest.
Across London boroughs, Hillingdon (1,263) has more than twice as
many licensed Teslas as the next borough, Westminster (514).
Barking & Dagenham (26) has the lowest number.
The following table shows the ten local authorities (across
England, Scotland and Wales) with the highest number of Teslas
licensed with the DVLA.

John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco,
comments: “While Tesla will always grab the headlines
because of its eccentric CEO, consumers now have a wide range of
electric vehicles (EVs) to choose from if they are ready to
switch to green motoring.
“On our platform today, we have 426,000 EV leasing deals, of
which only 20,000 are Teslas. And we expect the number of EV
deals to grow significantly over the next two to three years.
“The demand is there, with enquiries for electric cars on our
site almost doubling in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the
same period in 2020. And a recent survey we carried out revealed
that a third of car owners would consider switching to electric
when they buy or lease their next car.”
