- GMB union backs using hydrogen and hydrogen boilers as key
tool in tackling greenhouse emissions
GMB, the union for energy workers, has backed hydrogen
technologies as essential for delivering a cleaner and greener
future.
The union believes the technologies will create thousands of
repurposed high skilled, well paid jobs.
Reports have suggested that Hydrogen heat pumps would ‘lock-in’ a
dependency on fossil fuels. [1]
However, the union argues that a ‘embracing a range of
technologies' including hydrogen is the only way to combat
growing carbon emissions in a realistic way.
Gary Carter, GMB national officer said:
“We all want a cleaner and greener future, but the truth is that
the high cost of heat pumps and their size make them unaffordable
and unsuitable for millions of UK homes.
“Heating homes with hydrogen and using hydrogen boilers that are
the same size and cost of a traditional methane gas boiler is a
realistic and affordable option for millions of UK homes.
“It will also provide thousands of repurposed high skilled, well
paid jobs.
“Heat pumps alone cannot deliver this. Embracing a range of
technologies and offering choice is the way to net zero and
heating people’s homes.”
