The framework National Data Strategy was published on 9 September
2020 and was open for consultation until 9 December 2020. The
consultation period has now closed and the responses received are
under consideration. Thank you for your insight, comment and
collaboration to date.
We will be publishing the government’s response in due course.
About the National Data Strategy
The aim of the National Data Strategy (NDS) is to drive the
collective vision that will support the UK to build a
world-leading data economy.
It will help ensure that people, businesses and organisations
trust the data ecosystem, are sufficiently skilled to operate
effectively within it, and can get access to data when they need
it.
The NDS will also provide coherence and impetus to the wide range
of data-led work across government, while creating a shared
understanding across the economy of how data is used.
The story so far
In June 2019, we opened our call for evidence and ran a series of
stakeholder engagements. A summary our findings
from this process has been published alongside the strategy.
These findings were critical in helping us develop the National Data Strategy
framework document. We are keen to continue engaging with
stakeholders and receiving evidence to further discuss the scope,
ambition and current proposals within the strategy. You can take part in the
consultation until 11:45pm on 9 December 2020.
COVID-19 response
As with so many sectors, the COVID-19 crisis has caused us to
reflect on our priorities. The UK’s response has only increased
our understanding of the significance of data use within the
economy, society and the public sector, underlining the
importance of ensuring that data can be shared in timely and
trustworthy ways. The National Data Strategy will take account of
lessons learned from the COVID-19 response.
In the global recovery from this crisis, we must draw upon the
UK’s long-championed values of transparency, accountability and
inclusion. The sharing of best practice will be more vital than
ever in ensuring that data underpins our future resilience and
economic prosperity, throughout this crisis and beyond.
