will pitch to voters in Hartlepool and across the
North East today [Saturday], campaigning in Hartlepool and Durham
on the final weekend before elections on 6th May.
Writing exclusively for the Northern Echo today, Starmer sets out
the clear choice facing voters in the North East: between
Labour’s relentless focus on jobs, health and tackling crime, and
a Conservative Party that is “hopelessly distracted by sleaze and
scandal.”
The Labour leader will be joined by Deputy Leader on the campaign trail today, speaking to residents and
businesses. They will also see the work being done by the
Labour-led Durham County Council to create housing, jobs and
growth in the local area.
Speaking directly to voters across the region, Starmer today
promised that a government under his leadership would always
ensure that “taxpayers’ money is spent wisely.” The pledge comes
amid the ongoing row over the funding of the Prime Ministers flat
refurbishment and after ‘crony’ contracts worth billions of
pounds were handed to Tory friends and donors during the
pandemic.
The Labour leader also promised voters that Labour’s candidates,
such as in Hartlepool,
will be relentlessly focused on “ensuring your neighbourhood is a
great place to grow up in, grow old in and live.”
Writing in the Northern Echo on the final weekend of
campaigning before Thursday’s elections, , Leader of the Labour Party, said:
“Instead of tackling the issues that matter, the Conservative
Party has become hopelessly distracted by sleaze and scandal. And
it’s you and your family who feel the impact.
“At next week’s elections there is a very clear choice: Labour
candidates who will be relentlessly focused on jobs, tackling
crime and supporting your health. Or the same old Tories: sleaze,
waste, one rule for them, and another for everyone else.
“I’ll be back in the North East today, in Durham and Hartlepool,
making that argument. The Prime Minister may not know the value
of the pound in his pocket, but we know you do. The least people
should be able to expect from their government is that taxpayers'
money is spent wisely.
“Under my leadership, it will be.
“Labour is focused on ensuring your neighbourhood is a great
place to grow up in, grow old in and live. Our priorities are
your priorities - supporting business, creating jobs, making
neighbourhoods safe and protecting the NHS.”
