Scotland’s Finance Secretary has pledged that a re-elected SNP Government will
scrap council tax charges for under 22s.
Raising the age at which Scots become eligible for council tax
from 18 to 22 is expected to save young people in their own homes
hundreds of pounds a year.
For a young person living alone in a Band B property that will
mean an annual saving of around £750.
Commenting on the promise, the SNP’s said:
“We know the pandemic has had a stark impact on the job prospects
of our young people.
“Through our Young Person’s Guarantee, the SNP will ensure that
every 18 to 24-year-old is given an opportunity of a job,
apprenticeship, education, training or volunteering.
“We will make it easier and more affordable for young people to
get to work by expanding concessionary travel to everyone under
the age of 22.
“And in recognition of the impact Covid has had on lives and
opportunities for young people, particularly those entering the
jobs market for the first time, a re-elected SNP Scottish
Government will increase the age at which young people become
eligible for council tax from 18 to 22.
“A move that will save young people in their own homes hundreds
of pounds a year.
“The SNP is serious about putting young people at the very heart
of our recovery from this pandemic – so future generations can
decide Scotland’s future, not .
“Both votes SNP at the upcoming election will put young Scots in
the driving seat towards the fairer, greener and smarter Scotland
that we all know is possible.”
