Mayor of London statement on Supreme Court Uber ruling

“I want London to be the best place to do business and also the best place to work.

“Gig economy workers deserve the same rights as other workers.

“I urge businesses in the capital, including private hire companies, to pay their workers the London Living Wage, and to give them the security they deserve.

“Treating workers well leads to increased productivity.

“London is a tech powerhouse for the world – but employers must play by the rules.

“Throughout the pandemic trade unions have played an absolutely critical role – acting responsibly to protect workers and customers alike. Today is yet another reminder of the huge force for good that trade unions play in our society.”

NOTES

• Neither the Mayor or TfL as the licensing authority currently have the powers under legislation to require private hire companies to adopt particular pay and conditions for drivers.
• The Mayor continues to urge all companies across London to pay their workers the London Living Wage, and give them the security they deserve, whether access to sick pay, holiday pay or maternity and paternity pay. The Mayor wants this to become the norm across the gig economy.
