More funding announced for Additional Learning Needs in Wales

Statement by Kirsty Williams MS, Minister for Education:

The Covid-19 pandemic has created some challenging scenarios for all our learners and especially those with Additional Learning Needs; their families; and those who work to support them. They are often the most vulnerable learners in our education system.

I am therefore pleased to announce a further £9.8 million to support Additional Learning Needs in 2020-21 specifically in response to pressures arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. This is in addition to the £8 million announced last year and the £20 million package of support for the ALN Transformation Programme already in place for the current Senedd term, and recognises the particular difficulties for children and young people with additional needs during Covid-19.

The “check in, catch up and prepare” period helped us identify and remove barriers to learning faced by children who are vulnerable or disadvantaged, including those with ALN. Subsequently I published supplementary guidance for the autumn term dedicated to supporting the practical, emotional and learning needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged children, including those with ALN. The additional funding announced today will help Local Authorities and Further Education Institutions supplement and build upon the measures already put in place.
