MP has condemned the Prime Minister for failing to
act and help millions of children in poverty in the UK.
The SNP Westminster Leader called on to make a commitment to making the £20 uplift to
Universal Credit permanent and extending it to legacy benefits,
highlighting new research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and
the baby bank charity Little Village which reveals 1.3million
children under five are living in poverty in the UK.
Mr Blackford said the Tories have been stalling on the issue for
months and asked the Prime Minister to finally act and not leave
'millions of children out in the cold.'
Commenting, MP said:
"1.3 million children under five are living in poverty in the UK
- this is a truly shocking figure that should make this Tory
government utterly ashamed.
"The SNP has repeatedly called for a financial package to boost
household incomes and reverse this Tory child poverty crisis.
"This morning, a new report from Citizens Advice Scotland warned
Tory cuts could reduce the value of Universal Credit by as much
as a quarter - just when people need this money the most.
"The Prime Minister seemed unaware that many of the families
struggling to make ends meet are working households.
"And for the Prime Minister to describe the SNP as "left-wing" as
if it were some sort of insult was ridiculous - the SNP is proud
to stand up for left-wing progressive policies.
"I have asked the Prime Minister to meet with me, and the other
opposition parties, ahead of the budget for an urgent summit on
tackling child poverty. is at risk of becoming yet another Tory Prime
Minister who leaves a generation of children languishing in
poverty."
