The SNP has slammed the UK government for more “Tory cronyism”
following the appointment of a former Conservative MP, and
political ally of the Party, as the new chair of the Office for
Students (OfS).
Education Secretary has
appointed close friend, to the role, which focuses on the higher education
sector in England – despite having no senior experience in the
field.
The role will also bring with it a taxpayer-funded salary of
£60,000 for just two days’ work per week.
The news follows a series of revelations that the Tory government
has awarded billions of taxpayers’ money to companies linked with
the Party. A National Audit Office report revealed a lack of
transparency and adequate documentation of UK government
procurement decisions during the coronavirus pandemic.
Commenting, said:
“This is just the latest in a long list of examples that Tory
cronyism is rife in Whitehall and Westminster.
“The connection has with the Conservative Party is clear for all to
see – therefore it is no surprise that he has now landed himself
a comfortable £60,000 a year salary for a job he is nowhere near
qualified to hold. The Tories must think the public are buttoned
up the back if they believe this is a good use of tax payers'
money.
“This demonstrates the importance of my Ministerial Interest
(Emergency Powers) Bill. I am urging all MPs to back my Bill so
we can put an end to Tory cronyism once and for all. If passed,
it will ensure each and every contract handed out by this UK
government is scrutinized and held to account.
“If the Tories continuously fail to back this Bill, it will
become clear that they have a lot to hide.”
