(Con):...I know there will be some colleagues
on the Conservative Benches—indeed, on all sides—who may be
concerned that this power would be used and abused by the
supporters of Hamas and Hezbollah to
try it on with bogus claims against Israel. No
doubt they will try stunts like that, but the threshold for proving
genocide is extremely high and, in my view, nothing
Israel has done has come within a million miles of
the definition. But these terrorist groups and their bedfellows
will have a go, just as they invoke bogus allegations against
Israel now. Also, some Conservative colleagues may
be concerned that this is a move against free trade. Yes, it is—but
first of all, as I said, it is a very high threshold to prove, and
we are not going to have dozens of countries determined by our
courts as genocide perpetrators...
