Green light for Drax - Greenpeace comment

The Court of Appeal has ruled that plans for Drax to build Europe's largest gas plant can go ahead. In response Doug Parr, Chief Scientist for Greenpeace UK, said:

“This legal win is yet another failure of climate leadership from the UK government ahead of a crucial UN climate summit – it should not be for the courts to tell us that major projects can be rejected on climate grounds or that government should think about long term carbon impacts.

“Government is allowing the construction of Britain's first new coal mine in 30 years, and was fighting for the construction of the largest gas power station in Europe, so is sending the worst possible signal at the worst possible time. Ministers are behaving like someone trying to galvanise a pacifist rally by waving a machinegun.

“Now that Joe Biden's election has rekindled hopes for global climate action, Boris Johnson's job is to harness this momentum, not dampen it. The government must U-turn and halt these climate-wrecking projects, while the onus is also on Drax to do the right thing and take this project off the table."
