Scottish Labour: Government must act over "hammer-blow" Shell job losses

Commenting on the news that Royal Dutch Shell plans to cut 330 jobs from its North Sea workforce, Scottish Labour economy spokesperson Alex Rowley said: “This decision will come as a hammer-blow to the economy of the North East and Scotland as a whole.

“In this time of acute economic crisis it is deeply distressing that Royal Dutch Shell has seen fit to cut so many high-skill, high-pay jobs.

“Both the UK and Scottish Governments cannot leave Aberdeen and the North East at the mercy of global energy giants like Royal Dutch Shell.

“Scotland simply cannot afford to have a government that sits on its hands over these job losses. It’s time for active government intervention to protect as many jobs as possible and for a proper plan for the creation and retention of jobs in Scotland’s energy sector to be delivered.”
