With the news that the UK government will be banning the
sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2030, electric vehicles
(EV) have taken centre stage. It’s also got people thinking about
green number plates. On the 8th December 2020, all newly
registered and existing electric cars in the UK will be eligible
to wear a green flash on their number-plate. The green flash
indicates that you are driving EV or low-emission.

news. However, CEO Jason Wilkes, feels that the government could
meet them halfway to really drive home ‘eco pride’.
“It’s great that EV drivers are going to be able to show
that they care about the environment,” Wilkes says. “Why wouldn’t
you want to carry your eco-friendly badge with pride? With the
government taking huge steps recently to push for the EV
revolution, these new plates can’t come soon enough.”
“But, if we are discussing eco pride, EV drivers could
combine a green flash plate with a custom number. The government
could highlight plates with green flashes alongside custom
numbers that show off your environmentally-friendly car even
clearer to the wider public.”
Russell Palmer, Sales Director at CarReg.co.uk,
echoes this sentiment. “We’d love to work with the government on
a sales system that allows drivers to doubly show off their
eco-credentials.”
“The more people are aware of the eco-themed number plates
which are available to buy right now, the more eco pride we will
be seeing on our roads.”

for example, that will really tie in well with these new EV
plates. For example, you could choose EV03 ZRO, X400
TES, or even T999

£2,200 back in 2009, which would be worth thousands more in the
current market.

understands that it’s just as much about awareness as it is
about pride. , the Minister for Transport, is rolling out the new
green plates after a long period of waiting. CarReg.co.uk’s
team believes that there’s just not enough press activity
surrounding this.
“This isn’t just about pride, or ego, and it’s certainly
not about one-upmanship,” Wilkes says. “It’s about spreading
awareness. There are plenty of reasons to shout about being
eco-friendly. However, spreading awareness that EV is on the
road, that ownership is rising, and that ‘you too’ can get a
custom number plate with a green flash, is extremely
important.”
“We have waited a long time for Mr Shapps to present these
new plates. Granted, the pandemic conditions may have added time
to the production and launch.”
“However, now that we have the Prime Minister’s ten-point
plan, it’s a great opportunity for eco-motorists to kit out their
vehicles and to show that they will be taking part in this EV
revolution.”
