MP's cash campaign returns to Parliament

A campaign to safeguard the availability of traditional currency for the future has been stepped up by David Mundell, Conservative MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.

He is co-sponsoring a debate on the topic early next month with Conservative colleague Paul Maynard Conservative MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys.

Both are concerned that moves towards a cashless society - a world where almost all transactions are electronic - may have accelerated because of the Covid-19 crisis.

Mr Mundell said: "I'm pleased to have another opportunity to highlight this issue. It is a real worry to a significant number of my constituents, especially effecting some of those who are older or vulnerable in other ways.

"There are now fewer cash dispensers available, less enthusiasm amongst some retailers to use bank notes and coins whilst it is also harder for many businesses and organisations to do so."

The debate, on 'access to and acceptance of cash' during the pandemic, is scheduled for Thursday December 3 from 1.30 pm in Westminster Hall.
