The Department for Education have laid a
SI in
Parliament that will amend legislation to allow more redundant
apprentices to complete their apprenticeships.
, Apprenticeships and Skills Minister said:
Covid-19 has had a big impact on the economy, and we know
that some apprentices have lost their jobs or are facing
redundancy as a result.
“Our Redundancy Support Service is making sure apprentices
can get the help they need.”
"We are going even further by changing the law so more
apprentices who have been made redundant can complete their
programmes. We want to make sure that every apprentice has the
training and skills they have gained recognised so that they can
continue on their track and build their career”.

Currently the Education and Skills Funding Agency
continue to fund apprentices to complete if they are made
redundant within six months of their final day of
training.

We are changing the law to extend this support to also
fund to completion for apprentices who are at least 75% of
their way through their apprenticeship at the point of
redundancy. The change will mean more redundant apprentices can
complete their apprenticeship, putting them in a stronger
position to secure new employment.

As part of the Government’s Plan for Jobs, from September
we are supporting employers to invest in the skilled workforce
they need to recover and grow by offering £2,000 for each new
apprentice they hire aged under 25 and £1,500 for those aged 25
and over.
