Avoid another mutant algorithm in planning, says CPRE

Commenting on government ministers considering changes to the housing need algorithm, which features as part of the new planning proposals, Tom Fyans, Deputy Chief Executive at CPRE, the countryside charity, said:

‘The only housing algorithm we need now is one that identifies where to build the most affordable homes in the areas that need them most, including rural areas, without needless loss of countryside and the sidelining of local communities.

‘Critically, local authorities and locally elected officials should be in the driver's seat with the right checks and balances to weed out any mutant results. By including local scrutiny in planning what we build where, we can truly begin building better homes and places that tackle the housing crisis, while also facing up to the climate and nature emergencies.’
