Alison McGovern responds to news Wigan Athletic has gone into administration

“This is terrible news for fans and the local area. Local football clubs are not businesses like any other – they have played a crucial role in supporting their communities through this crisis.

“Losing a local institution is a further kick in the teeth for towns across the country who are facing the shock of the pandemic and other long term changes on their high streets after a decade of austerity.

“We need coordination and action from DCMS urgently. Otherwise, many other clubs will be facing the same fate.”
