The Department for Education has published the latest data
on attendance in
education and early years settings.
Attendance statistics are published on a weekly basis, looking
back at the previous school week. This week, data is available up
to 18 June.
Education Secretary said:
“It is encouraging to see the number of pupils returning to
school continuing to grow. Around two thirds of secondary schools
opened to more pupils last week, giving thousands of Year 10 and
12 students the benefit of invaluable contact time with their
teachers.
“We expect these numbers to continue to rise - particularly now
primary schools have the flexibility to invite back more
children, if they can do so within the existing guidance – and
would encourage families to take up the opportunity of a school
place if they are able to.
“Being at school is vital for all children and I want to express
again how incredibly grateful I am to all the teachers, childcare
and support staff who are making it possible for young people to
be back in classrooms, ahead of a full return for all pupils in
September.”
Background
· Attendance
statistics are published on a weekly basis, looking back at the
previous school week. This week data is available up to 18
June.
· Our
estimates show more than 1.1million pupils attended schools and
colleges last week.
· Our
narrative continues to focus on comparisons between Thursdays to
maintain comparability with previous weeks. Comparisons are made
between Thursday 18 June and Thursday 11 June.
-
Around 70% of schools respond to the education settings
survey. Before being published, the figures are adjusted
to provide a national picture.
-
On Thursday 18 June, an estimated 92% of education
settings were open in some capacity.
-
An estimated 78% of settings usually open to children in
nursery, reception, year 1 or year 6 were open to at least one
of these year groups on 18 June, up from 67% on 11 June.
-
Attendance was highest in year 6, with an estimated 34%
of all year 6 children in attendance on 18 June, up from 26% on
11 June.
-
Attendance was around 26% in year 1, up from 20%, and 29%
in reception, up from 22% on 11 June.
· We
estimate that on 18 June, 282,000 children were attending early
years setting, up from 234,000 on 11 June. This represents about
17% of the number of children who usually attend in term
time.
· Schools
and colleges began welcoming back Year 10 and 12 students for
some face-to-face support to help them prepare for a return to
the classroom from September.
· We
estimate 60% of settings (excluding further education
institutions) usually open to students in year 10 and 12 were
open to at least one of these year groups on 18 June.
Approximately 65,000 year 10 students
and 25,000 year 12 students were in attendance
on 18 June.
