The Mayor of London, , said:
“Londoners desperately need the Government to fully reverse
their damaging cuts to the police budget since 2010.
“However, the announcement today does not even make up for
the number of police officers lost since 2010, even though our
population has grown.
“Both the Met Commissioner and I will push the Government
to give us the 6,000 extra police officers our city needs, and a
proper long-term funding commitment in order to recruit and
support them.
“More police officers to deter and catch criminals is just
one half of the equation - we also need to be tough on tackling
the root causes of crime. Sadly there is little sign that the
Government will reverse their huge cuts to youth services,
schools, councils and community facilities that caused crime to
rise in the first place.”

The Government has announced it proposes to empower
Police and Crime Commissioners to increase their Band D precept
by up to £10 in 2020/21 without the need to call for a local
referendum. If the Mayor decided to take the decision to raise
the policing precept element of Council Tax, which would
represent an increase from 1.99% to 4.1%, it would reflect an
additional increase of £15.7m towards policing and
crime from what he previously assumed
