The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Committee is to question Climate Change
Minister Lord Duncan of Springbank, along with Ofgem and the
Data Communications Company (DCC), on the lack
of progress made installing domestic smart electricity
meters.
Following a
hearing with the Government in January, the
Committee expressed concerns about
delays to the roll-out of smart meters and the rising cost of the
programme.
This follow-up session will be examining the reasons behind
a continued decline in installation rates and how the Government
intends to reverse the fall off in take-up. It will also examine
how realistic the proposed new target for smart meters to be
installed in 85% of homes by 2024 is for customers and suppliers,
and the costs and benefits of the programme.
In September, the Government proposed a delay to the
rollout from the original target of 2020. It was also revealed
that the estimated total cost of the programme had risen to
£13.5bn from £11bn in 2016.
