Experts have reviewed existing evidence
and found that for most people, taking dietary supplements has no
benefit for brain health beyond that provided by a healthy,
nutritionally balanced diet. The report, ‘The real
deal on Brain Health Supplements’ is issued
today (Saturday 29th) June conducted by
the Global Council on Brain Health
(GCBH).
Dr Jana Voigt, Head of Research at
Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:
“Understanding how our diet affects our brain health as we age is
important and could give us clues about how to prevent dementia
cases. We welcome this independent, wide-scale report by the
Global Council on Brain Health which concludes that there is no
good evidence to suggest that any specific dietary supplement can
improve the health of the brain.
“While specific supplements
may not be beneficial for brain health, there are lifestyle
factors within our power to change that help support healthy
ageing. As well as maintaining a healthy, nutritionally balanced
diet, not smoking, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol in
check, drinking within the recommended limits, and staying
mentally and physically active can also help to maintain a
healthy brain as we get
older.
“While most people can get
all the nutrients they need from a healthy diet, this is not the
case for everyone, and dietary supplements are essential for some
people. People should consult their GP before stopping any
prescribed treatments or if they have concerns about their brain
health
“Alzheimer’s Research UK is
now funding pioneering research exploring ways to help people
keep to a healthy, Mediterranean-style diet and whether this
approach could help support memory and thinking as we
age.”
