Responding to the Sutton Trust and the Social Mobility
Commission’s Elitist Britain 2019, showing that Britain’s most
influential people are over five times more likely to have been
to a fee-paying school, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary
MP
said:
“For
too long our top professions have been a closed club, dominated
by a wealthy and privileged elite who attended the same private
schools. The old boys’ network and the old school tie still hold
back talented and hard-working people from less privileged
backgrounds.
“Under the Tories, the privileged remain privileged while people
from working-class backgrounds are denied opportunities to get
on.
“Labour will focus on giving every child the chance to flourish,
not just a lucky few, focusing on social justice not just social
mobility. A radical transformation of society is required to
break the cycle of entrenched privilege, and that is what Labour
will deliver.
“The next Labour government will create a new Social
Justice Commission and appoint a new Minister for Social Justice
to build a country in which everyone has the opportunity to reach
their full potential, regardless of their background.”
