proud of the role that Jews played in the growth of the trade union
movement and the founding of the Labour party. The Jewish community
was instrumental in setting up trade unions. The “Jewish
Encyclopedia” of 1906 lists 39 Jewish unions set up between 1882
and 1902. The London Jewish Bakers’ Union was created in 1905 as
the International Bakers’ Union—members came from Germany, Poland,
