Science & Tech Committee respond to Huawei involvement in 5G network

The Chair of the Science and Technology Select Committee, Norman Lamb MP, has responded to the Prime Minister’s reported decision to allow Huawei to supply parts of the country’s 5G network.

Rt Hon Norman Lamb MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

“It is clear that there is significant disagreement within Government over the Prime Minister’s reported decision to allow Huawei to supply ‘non-core’ parts of the country’s 5G network.

“I expect the Science and Technology Select Committee will now convene an evidence session very soon to question Ministers on this decision and to hear directly from Huawei.

“The Government should publish its telecoms supply chain review, including its 5G plans, without delay.

“It is vital that this country makes its own decisions regarding matters of national security, rather than bowing to pressure from others. 

“However, protecting our national security is non-negotiable. Judgements must be based on evidence and a robust evaluation of risk.”
