EP and Council negotiators reach deal on upgrade of road infrastructure management rules

On Thursday, the European Parliament and Council Romanian Presidency negotiators reached an agreement on strengthening the road infrastructure safety management rules.

“The EU will have new safety rules with the aim of preventing and reducing the number of accidents and consequently road deaths. I am very satisfied because we now have new legislation, which provides concrete and effective measures. The rules will now also apply to all motorways and to the main roads connecting the major cities and regions,” said rapporteur Daniela Aiuto (EFDD, IT).

The road infrastructure safety management rules require that road safety audits are carried out during design and construction of infrastructure projects and when roads are in use. The agreed rules extend these requirements beyond the Trans-European Transport Network roads to motorways and primary roads.

Next steps

The agreed text now needs to be approved by the Council and the Parliament as a whole and will have to be transposed into national law within two years.
