MP, has
called on the Prime Minister to explain on what grounds can
farmers and rural communities be assured that Westminster defends
their interests when the Government prefers 'no deal' to a
People's Vote.
The Plaid Cymru leader made the comments when questioning the
Prime Minister on a statement on the latest Brexit developments
in the House of Commons.
Earlier this week the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) released a
statement saying “there seems to be growing support for a second
referendum across the country, which appears to be reflected in
our own sector”.
Ms Saville Roberts emphasised that the Prime Minister was more
prepared to consider a no deal – which she admits would be
disastrous for the entire Welsh economy – than a People’s Vote
which would end the uncertainty and give clarity on the way
forward.
Following the statement, Ms Saville Roberts also criticised the
Prime Minister’s claim that she would involve the devolved
parliaments and governments, noting that she had offered to do so
previously, only to ignore their recommendations.
During the statement updating the House of Commons on
Brexit,
MP said:
“Farming is integral to Welsh heritage. It is the beating
heart of our rural economy.
“What the Prime Minister must understand is this: when
she humours the idea of a ‘no deal’ Brexit from the comfort of
the Westminster establishment, she freezes the heart’s blood of
our communities.
“When I meet Welsh farmers this week, on what grounds can
I possibly assure them that Westminster defends their interests
when the Prime Minister would prefer 'no deal' to a People's
Vote.”
Following the statement, Ms Saville
Roberts said:
“The Prime Minister talks a good game of involving Wales
and Scotland in negotiations, however, this was promised during
the triggering of A50 only for the concerns of our country to be
side-lined and powers stolen.
“The Westminster Government only talks of consensus and
cooperation when it suits them.
“People’s livelihoods and wages are on the line, the
Prime Minister and the Labour party must stop playing political
games and join us in supporting real solutions to this Brexit
mess.”
