The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Committee is to question Climate Change and
Industry Minister , Ofgem and stakeholders on the
roll-out of smart meters and delays to the Government’s delivery
programme.
The session will follow up on the findings and conclusions of
the recent National Audit Office
report ‘Rolling out smart meters’, which examined the
management of the programme by the Department for Business,
Energy and Industrial Strategy. The report said
that there was “no realistic
prospect” of meeting a goal of all homes and businesses being
offered a smart meter by the end of 2020 as planned and warned
that the cost of the roll-out would likely escalate beyond
expected levels.
The session will start with a hearing with Energy UK and Citizens
Advice, before members question the Minister, Ofgem and Smart
DCC.
The evidence session is likely to cover issues relating to the
delays in installing smart meters, including the impact on
customers and the management of costs by BEIS. MPs could also ask
about the obligations placed on energy companies to deliver the
roll-out, and issues relating to the roll-out of SMETS1 meters
and their potential replacement by second-generation SMETS2
meters.
