The SNP has welcomed figures that show the number of
women across Scotland participating in basketball, football,
hockey, aquatics, rugby, snow sports and tennis clubs has risen by
24% over the last four years.
Figures from the independent Scottish Parliament Information Centre
(SPICe) reveal that 39% more women are playing in basketball clubs,
46% more in hockey clubs, 41% more in football clubs, 10% more in
aquatics, 9% more in tennis clubs and 22% more women are playing
rugby union since 2014/15.
Earlier this year, the First Minister announced funding for
Scotland’s women’s national football team to allow them to train
full-time ahead of the 2019 World Cup in France.
Welcoming the news, Deputy Convener of the Parliament’s Health and
Sport Committee,
, said:
“I am delighted to see more women and girls getting involved in
sport here in Scotland - the SNP’s additional support for
SportScotland in this year’s draft budget will only help to
encourage even more women to join a sports team.
“While funding for sport and facilities is vital in helping to get
more women involved in sport, the SNP’s commitment to almost double
the paid-for provision of childcare across Scotland by 2020 is just
as important in helping to break down the barriers that prevent
more women taking part in sport.
“It’s been fantastic to see the hard work of our women’s national
football team pay off with their qualification to the World Cup in
France next year. Additional funding from the Scottish Government
will allow the squad to train full-time from January 2019 through
to the tournament next summer, giving the team the best chance of
success for the finals while strengthening the image women and
girls’ football across the country.
“While there is still more to do to for female sport – I am
delighted to see more and more women getting the opportunity to be
part of our rich sporting culture in Scotland.”
