Energy market failing households – Long Bailey

Rebecca Long Bailey MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the decision by the Competition and Markets Authority to allow the Big Six to become the Big Five, said:

“I’m concerned at this decision in an energy market that is already failing households.

“This year, SSE awarded its chief executive a 72% pay rise while hiking average bills by £76. Npower hiked bills by £64. And we know we cannot rely on the government, which after more than a year of dithering introduced a price cap that is too little too late.

“Labour is also concerned that the merger should not lead to job losses at either company. Providing high levels of customer service and supplying secure, green energy requires investment in skills – not prioritising shareholder dividends.”
