Cabinet Secretary for Education, , will launch the Welsh
Government’s new Rural Education action plan at Ysgol Bro Pedr in
Lampeter.
The Rural Education Action Plan will provide targeted support for
rural schools and pupils, prioritise leadership and professional
learning opportunities for teachers, and ensure schools play a
more central role in their communities
An important element of the plan is the introduction of a new and
innovative project, ‘Esgol’. The ‘Esgol’ project is based on the
‘E-Sgoil’ initiative introduced by the Scottish Government in the
Hebrides which aims to ensure that every secondary school
learners in the outer Hebrides is able to access an increased
range of subjects in both English and Gaelic by using video
conferencing technology to connect classrooms. This means that
pupils from one school can join classes at other schools
remotely.
Ceredigion County Council with a school population of just under
10,000 pupils spread across 39 primary and 7 secondary or all
through schools will pilot the project in Wales.
The Cabinet Secretary will join pupils at Ysgol Bro Pedr as they
participate in a lesson with children from Sgoil Lionacleit in
Uist, Hebrides via ‘Esgol’ video link in the first ever lesson of
its kind to be held in Wales.
