Several illegal posters have appeared across London on bus
shelters featuring anti-Semitic messages.
The London Assembly agreed a unanimous
motion voted unanimously today to
condemn the posters.
AM, who proposed
the motion said:
“Yesterday we saw a concerted effort by racist, anti-Semitic
and politically motivated people to intimidate London’s Jewish
communities. We must make a clear and united stand when it comes
to racism in all forms and make sure that those trying to
demonise certain communities in our city are brought to
Justice.”
AM who
seconded the motion said:
“It isn’t so long ago that the Assembly passed unanimously
the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of
anti-Semitism, only the second public body to do so in the
country. Acting on this issue is entirely consistent with that
decision. This is not the first time these outrages have
happened, and I have raised this with Transport for London
several times before. On the last occasion I sent evidence of the
people who did this boasting about it on social media, but there
was no follow up investigation. Those responsible must be
identified and prosecuted if this abuse is to be deterred in the
future.
“I also question why it is so easy to access the advertising
cabinets and stick these illegally fly-posted messages behind the
Perspex, covering over legitimate and paid for adverts. The
operators should also look at installing proper locks to prevent
this continuing to occur.”
The full text of the motion is:
This Assembly condemns the "Israel is a racist endeavour" posters
that have been illegally stuck on a number of London bus
shelters, thanks the Mayor for his swift criticism of this
vandalism and urges Transport for London and the Metropolitan
Police Service and all relevant parties to ensure that those
responsible are identified, found and brought to justice."
