Scottish Conservative MP has welcomed reassurances from
Exchequer Secretary on reports of tax rises for
the oil and gas industry.
The UK Government minister was in Aberdeen yesterday (Tues) for
meetings with sector leaders from Oil and Gas UK and the UK Oil
and Gas Authority.
Media reports last week suggested that the North Sea sector could
be hit with production tax hikes in the upcoming Budget, given
sustained higher oil prices.
, Scottish Conservative MP for
Gordon, said:
“It was great to see back in Aberdeen for talks
with oil and gas industry leaders.
“The minister was absolutely clear that this Conservative
government remains committed to supporting the offshore sector.
“Mr Jenrick also dismissed recent speculation about tax rises in
the upcoming Budget as being without substance. I hope that will
provide some reassurance to the industry.
“This was simply a scare story that was blatantly spread by the
SNP last week. It is disappointing that local politicians would
adopt such tactics, which simply serve to undermine the fragile
recovery in the North Sea at a time when the industry needs new
investment.
“For the Nationalists, all that matters is independence, and they
are willing to do and say anything to break up the UK.”
