Labour has called for a crackdown on tax havens following
reports that avoidance schemes are being used to shield
companies responsible for deforestation and overfishing.
A new report found that 70% of vessels implicated in illegal,
unreported or unregulated fishing are registered in tax havens.
MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to
the Treasury, said:
“Labour wants a full national debate about the role of tax
havens and in particular the role of British Overseas
Territories as tax havens.
“This should include why the Tories have dragged their feet on
taking decisive action to tackle this abuse.
“Under the UK’s broken tax system there is one rule for the
super-rich and another for the rest of us.
“The Tories have let those who avoid paying their fair share of
tax off the hook while they have been cutting the services our
communities rely on.
“The next Labour government will implement tough measures to
crack down on the super-rich and big corporations that seek to
abuse the system in this way.”
