Government comment on EMA amendment

A government spokesperson said this evening: “As set out in the White Paper, the UK is seeking participation in the European Medicines Agency. We would look to be an active participant and this would involve making an appropriate financial contribution. We will now reflect on this amendment and seek to revisit in the Lords.”

Background

The amendment in its current form goes beyond the White Paper by requiring that the government take “all necessary steps” to participate in the European Medicines Agency. The UK is looking to participate if the EU offers reasonable terms and it meets our objectives.
