Unite shop stewards representing over 100,000 manufacturing workers
from across the UK will join Unite general secretary Len McCluskey
outside parliament tomorrow (Tuesday 17
July) from 11:00 with a
giant roulette wheel to warn that the government’s Brexit chaos is
gambling UK jobs away.
Shop stewards from manufacturing companies including: Airbus,
BAE Systems, BMW, British Steel, Ford, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover,
Michelin, Nissan, Rolls-Royce, Peugeot, Pirelli, Siemens, Tata
Steel, Toyota and Vauxhall will be available for interview along
with Unite general secretary Len McCluskey.
Tomorrow’s photo-call coincides with the remaining stage of
the Trade bill and comes amid infighting and chaos within the
Conservative party over ’s Chequers’ deal and white paper
on Brexit.
Following the photo-call shop stewards will be holding a
briefing session in parliament and will lobby Conservative MPs
urging them to end the Brexit chaos and back UK manufacturing by
supporting a customs union which secures workable frictionless
trade with the EU.
Commenting ahead of tomorrow’s photo-call Unite general
secretary Len McCluskey said: “The Tories are
gambling with people’s jobs and our country’s manufacturing future.
“After two years and her Conservative party are
still fighting among themselves while the clock counts down on
reaching a deal with the EU.
“’s white paper is a fudge which
will not secure the workable frictionless trade that a customs
union offers or provide the protection from Trump’s trade war
that key industries such as steel urgently
need.
“It is not just the jobs of those working in the bigger
household name companies that are on the line, but also the
hundreds of thousands employed by local factories and small
businesses that are also part of a sector which sustains nearly
900,000 decent jobs in communities across the UK.
“As each day of Tory infighting passes people are
growing increasingly nervous for their jobs and fear that the
business investment needed to secure their futures will move
elsewhere.
“At this rate, it will not be workers who will benefit
from any so called Brexit dividend.
“It’s time the Tories stopped spinning the roulette
wheel and playing with people’s jobs. and her Conservatives need to
decide what comes first – Tory party self-interest or the people of
the UK?”
