BEIS Committee to hold pre-appointment hearing with Professor Martin Cave, the Government’s preferred candidate for Ofgem Chair

The session with the regulatory economist and former deputy chair of the Competition Commission and deputy panel chair of the Competition and Markets Authority will focus on his previous experience and his views on the current state of energy markets.

Committee Members are also likely to seek Professor Cave’s views on the independence of the regulator, its role in supporting new market entrants and its effectiveness for customers.      

Professor Cave’s appointment was announced on 25 June 2018. The Committee previously heard from Professor Cave as part of its pre-legislative scrutiny of the draft Domestic Gas and Electricity (Tariff Cap) Bill, following his support for a price cap in his work on the Competition and Markets Authority’s energy prices inquiry.

The Committee will publish a report following the session providing its assessment of Professor Cave’s suitability for the role, before the Secretary of State takes the final decision on his appointment
