Liberal Democrat MP has warned the Tories cannot
duck responsibility following indications from the European
Commission that Brexit means the UK will be excluded from a key
element of the Galileo project.
Speaking in the House of Commons today, Wera asked the Defence
Minister, , to confirm whether “the
possible threat to the Galileo Project and the future of the
British Space Industry was fully considered during the EU
referendum debate?”
In response, Mr Bebb claimed that “nobody thought that such a
response [from the European Commission] was likely.”
Following the exchange, said:
“The feeble response from the Minister only confirms what the
Liberal Democrats have been pointing out for a long time; this Tory
Government cannot have its cake and eat it. Time and again the
Leave camp was warned that the UK’s role in future EU projects
could end as a result of Brexit.
“The UK’s omission from Galileo is a chilling reminder of the
disastrous impact that Brexit is having on our economy and our
national security. This could all be avoided if not for this Tory
Government’s blind pursuit of Brexit at any cost.
“Liberal Democrats offer a path away from the cliff edge. We are
offering the people the final say on the deal, and an opportunity
Exit from Brexit.”
