The following is an extract from Prime Minister's Question Time in
the Commons today:
, Labour MP for Birkenhead,
praised India on its success with dealing with child trafficking
and called on the Prime Minister to draw lessons for this
country. said she had already met Prime
Minister Modi and there would be further discussions between
officials.
, Conservative MP for Harrow
East, said London welcomed “our good friend, Prime Minister
Modi.” He condemned the mobile billboards attacking Mr Modi and
asked Mrs May to congratulate and thank the 1.7 million Indian
diaspora for their contribution to the UK. Mrs May said: “India
is indeed a good friend to the United Kingdom.” The Indian
diaspora played an enormous role in our society and made a great
contribution to our economy. “When I spoke to Prime Minister Modi
we discussed how we can increase the links and development
between our two countries.”
, Labour MP for Walthamstow,
raised the case of her constituent, Michelle Samaraweera, who was
raped and murdered in 2009. Since 2012 Aman Vyas had been
avoiding extradition for this and eight other charges of sexual
assault on women. There had been 47 hearings to date at which the
judge didn’t show up for seven of them and seven different judges
had been appointed. She called on Mrs May to raise this case with
Prime Minister Modi and encourage India to take it seriously. Mrs
May said there were a number of extradition cases open between
the two countries. “It is important to recognise the independence
of the judiciary in both countries.”
