Barbara Keeley comment on IFS report into adult social care

Barbara Keeley MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Social Care, commenting on a new IFS report into adult social care, said:

“The findings of this report should act as a wakeup call to the Government. The Tories’ decision to abolish grant funding without clear plans for how councils will replace that money is looking increasingly reckless.

“Many councils with the highest demand for social care are the least able to raise money through council tax and business rates.  Yet, this Tory Government have no plans in place to make sure that those councils can fulfil their duties to provide adult social care.

“If the Tories are serious about tackling the crisis in social care they should follow Labour’s lead and pledge to invest £8 billion extra in social care across this Parliament, with £1 billion up front this year, to ease the social care crisis.

“With local elections round the corner, many voters will have the opportunity to send a strong message that they are fed up with Government cuts to their services by voting Labour on 3rd May.”
